Around the USA in 80 Days in an Old Biplane
PVPA was pleased to have as our October speaker Ken and Louise McCullough, owners of the green 1941 Stearman, which can be seen flying around the southland. Based at Cable airport the airplane was a five-year labor of love restoration project. After assembling his basket case, one of Ken's first trips was back to Galesburg, Illinois for the National Stearman fly-in where his “baby” was awarded the Grand Championship trophy.
This evening Ken and Louise recounted their trip around the southern 48, landing at 120 different airports in 80 flying days. They used 2,700 gallons of fuel and 35 gallons of oil on the trip. The longest leg of the trip covered 183 miles. Louise kept a log of the FBOs and restaurants along the way and reported that Galaxy Aviation in St Augustine, Florida to be the best FBO, but stay away from Concordia, Kansas if you are looking for service. Tied for the best airport restaurant were the eatery at Sanford, Maine and Merced, California.
If you wonder what it's like flying such a bird around the country, get Ken to tell his detailed account of the Gulfstream story and how controllers gave the Stearman priority over the biz jets.
