Pomona Valley Pilots Association Scholarships

Annually, the Pomona Valley Pilots Association awards scholarships to students at Chaffey College and Mt. San Antonio College. The purpose of the scholarship is to provide money for flight instruction, tools and/or instructional materials necessary for aviation-related courses or programs.

The Pomona Valley Pilots Association Scholarships are given to students who intend to pursue a career related to aviation as a pilot, air traffic controller, mechanic or flight attendant. The scholarships are awarded only to students who will be continuing their education through the fall of the year in which the award is presented, as confirmed to PVPA by the aviation department faculty of the colleges.

The number and size of the scholarships varies, depending on the financial status of PVPA. Much of the money for these scholarships is raised from the annual Pomona Valley Air Fair. The colleges select the scholarship recipients. To apply, a candidate should contact the aviation department of their respective college.

John Rudesill was a long-time member of PVPA who was keenly interested in helping young people. These scholarships are given in his memory. The intent is to provide two hours of introductory flight instruction to as many recipients as the funds will allow.

In recent years, $400.00 has been divided equally between students at Chaffey College and cadets of Civil Air Patrol Squadron 25, based at Cable airport.

To be eligible for one of these awards an applicant must be enrolled in one of the A and P programs at Chaffey College or is a cadet member of Squadron 25 of the Civil Air Patrol. Candidates for the John Rudesill scholarship must not had any flight instruction in powered aircraft. Chaffey College instructors and leaders of the Civil Air Patrol squadron choose the recipients. Interested parties should contact their instructor at Chaffey College of their squadron commander at the CAP.

The Private Pilot Course is designed to provide basic aeronautical knowledge for the pilot. The course includes instruction in the principles of flight, engine operations, aircraft performance, Federal Aviation Regulations, flight publications and special emphasis on air navigation. This course fulfills all requirements for the FAA Private Pilot Written Test. Integrated throughout the course are career preparation standards, which include basic academic skills, communication, interpersonal skills, problem solving, safety, technology, and other employment skills. This course meets the computer literacy graduation requirement in high schools. Instruction is provided through classroom skill and theory development.

Students will receive up to 180 hours of classroom instruction.
